It has been a rough start to the 2021-22 NBA season for the Los Angeles Lakers. The team currently finds itself with a 16-17 record despite having a superstar trio consisting of LeBron James, Russell Westbrook, and Anthony Davis.
The Lakers have sorely struggled has been the one that occurs most for them offensively; spot-up shooting. Los Angeles is producing just 0.961 points per possession in such sequences — ranking 23rd among all teams in the NBA, so far.
The Lakers have primarily relied upon Carmelo Anthony and Wayne Ellington as their most frequent catch-and-shoot threats. Anthony is knocking down shots from deep at a 39.6% clip in six attempts per game while Ellington is sitting at 36.8% on 5.3 takes per contest.
There isn’t enough shooting around LeBron James, Russell Westbrook, and Anthony Davis for the Lakers’ half-court offense to be fully optimized. Of course, their superstars must be better in their own right, but regardless, not having enough shooting is a real issue.
