Does this trade make sense for the Boston Celtics?

Giving up Marcus Smart is something that would ultimately hurt the Boston Celtics’ overall defense and their backcourt depth, but at the same time, going out and acquiring another All-Star could be too much of an opportunity to pass up on.

The NBA is dominated by All-Stars pairing up with one another right now and in the Eastern Conference alone, the top teams all have All-Star duos and trios. The Nets have Durant, Harden and soon Irving, the Heat have Lowry, Butler and Adebayo, the Bucks have Holiday, Middleton and Antetokounmpo and the Bulls have LaVine, DeRozan and Vucevic.

Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown are fantastic young players that are going to see a lot more All-Star appearances throughout their careers, but adding that third star to this team could ultimately be the difference in them losing in the first-round of the playoffs and potentially making it back to the Eastern Conference Finals.

Domantas Sabonis is not only one of the best low-post scorers in the league, but he is a terrific offensive rebounder and an overall solid facilitator. The 2x All-Star finished the fifth most triple-doubles in the league last season and is someone the Celtics could play through in the low-post while having Tatum, Brown and others spread the floor with ball-screens on the perimeter.

Pairing Sabonis with Al Horford in the frontcourt really opens things up on the floor for the Celtics and gives them an even stroner rebuilding team. Ranking just 22nd in the league in second-chance points, this trade would greatly improve the Celtics’ offense and make them a formidable team in the Eastern Conference.
