Does this trade make sense for the Indiana Pacers?
If the Indiana Pacers decide to move on from Domantas Sabonis, they should not look to do so in this trade. Getting Marcus Smart from Boston definitely brings some value to Indiana, but what exactly does Grant Williams and Romeo Langford bring?
They are both young talents that are still developing, but Langford has missed a ton of time early on in his career due to injuries and Williams is not really a high-level talent. Both players are nothing more than rotational guys that would see their minutes fluctuate over the course of the season, not really giving the Pacers much stability.
Marcus Smart would play right away and make an impact right away, but it is really hard to see where the Pacers get value in this trade. Maybe getting a first-round pick in 2022 works out in their favor, but again, if the Celtics make the playoffs, this pick will hold little value.
It is still a first-round pick, but assuming Boston makes a big jump with the addition of Sabonis, this draft pick would fall anywhere from 20-30. Compared to getting a potential lottery-pick from another team, this may not be the best return the Pacers can get for Domantas Sabonis.

Indiana is in a weird spot right now because they do not necessarily need to rebuild since they have high-level talents in Brogdon, Sabonis, Turner and LeVert, but at the same time, these guys have not been able to find much success on the floor.
A soft “rebuild” needs to happen in Indiana so they can not only gather more future assets, but more depth and talent. Leveraging Sabonis is a move that could realistically happen ahead of the trade deadline this season, but the Indiana Pacers will need at least two first-round picks and two players who can provide some stability both now and moving forward.
