Washington Wizards Receive: F Thaddeus Young
San Antonio Spurs Receive: F Davis Bertans, WAS 2025 1st Round Pick (Top-8 Protected)

Davis Bertans has been a sharpshooter from the perimeter for years with the Washington Wizards, but he has really struggled to begin this season. The soon-to-be 29-year-old forward is only shooting 27.5% from deep this season and is only averaging 5.2 points per game as a result of his inability to create space for himself.

Other than being a catch-and-shoot threat, Bertans does not bring much to the table offensively for the Washington Wizards right now, hence why they could look to trade him ahead of the trade deadline.

However, his contract is not too favorable, as the Wizards and Davis Bertans agreed to a five-year, $80M contract ahead of last season and he is still guaranteed $65M through the end of the 2024-25 season.

When you look at the state of the San Antonio Spurs right now, they could definitely have a need for a three-point shooter of Bertans’ caliber, but at the same time, they do not want to be tied down financially.

San Antonio has an outside chance to sneak into the play-in tournament this season, but they are still rebuilding for the future.

As a result, having small contracts that they can get out of and young players on their roster that they can build with is their main goal right now. Bertans (28) and the $65M remaining on his contract is not too favorable to the Spurs, which is why they may not be interested in him.

Giving up a first-round pick to appease the San Antonio Spurs is something the Wizards would likely have to do in a trade for Thaddeus Young, but the earliest pick they may be able to trade is in 2025.

Their first-round pick in 2023 was traded last year to the Rockets and as a result, it would be tough for them to find a way to trade their first-round pick in either 2022 or 2024.

Getting Thaddeus Young would certainly be a big addition in the Washington Wizards’ frontcourt, especially with Rui Hachimura being absent and not playing yet, but at the same time, finding a way to make this trade work could end up being too complicated.
