Ever since they acquired him from the Chicago Bulls as part of the sign-and-trade deal that sent NBA star DeMar DeRozan to Chicago, the San Antonio Spurs have been looking to trade Thaddeus Young.

What the Spurs are looking for in a trade for him remains unknown, but it does not seem like the veteran forward will remain in San Antonio past the NBA trade deadline.

Last season with the Bulls, Thad Young averaged 12.1 points, 6.2 rebounds, 4.3 assists, 1.1 steals, and shot 55.9% from the floor, making him a valuable commodity for several teams around the league to pursue their frontcourt.

At 33-years-old and being in the final year of his contract, Young can contribute to his team in many different ways and not be someone they have to worry about paying long-term. For a “one-year rental” basically, any team in the league could wind up trading for Thaddeus Young over the next few months.

One of those teams could very well wind up being the Washington Wizards, who have begun the 2021-22 season surprisingly well after trading All-Star point guard Russell Westbrook to the Los Angeles Lakers in the offseason.

With Bradley Beal surrounded by plenty of other key secondary talents in Spencer Dinwiddie, Kyle Kuzma, and Montrezl Harrell, the Wizards have begun the 2021-22 season 15-12 — placing them seventh in the Eastern Conference standings.

Many believed that Washington would take a step back this year and enter what looked to be another rebuilding process, but they simply re-tooled in the offseason and now this team looks like it has what it takes to make it back to the playoffs in back-to-back seasons.

So could Thaddeus Young be the final piece to the puzzle in the Wizards frontcourt in terms of them making the playoffs again? Let’s take a look at what this trade could look like and what Washington would look to trade away to acquire the veteran.
