Does this trade make sense for the Dallas Mavericks?

Giving up Dorian Finney-Smith, especially since this team ranks 21st in offensive rating and 18th in defensive rating, would not be a smart move for the Dallas Mavericks to make. However, going after Goran Dragic is still something that they should be interested in doing.

The only real way Dallas can make this work is by signing Dragic after he has been bought out by the Toronto Toronto Raptors. In doing so, the Mavericks would not have to worry about sending out equal contracts to that of Dragic’s in a trade and they could just simply sign him to a minimum contract.

On the other side of things though, Toronto is not going to just buy him out and let him sign with another team. Masai Ujiri and this front-office is going to do everything they can to try and move the veteran guard in a trade, even if all they get is a heavily protected second-round pick.

The Raptors have nothing to gain from buying Dragic out of his contract other than getting him off their roster, which again, does not help them in their efforts to potentially get back into the playoff picture.

The Mavericks pursuing Goran Dragic though is something that has been widely speculated for months now and Ira Winderman of The Sun-Sentinel states that Dragic would like to team up with Luka Doncic in Dallas.

“The sense is Goran works his way toward his preferred (and most viable) option of the Mavericks, to close out the season alongside Slovenian compatriot Luka Doncic…”

“Goran already has proven amenable to a bench role, something he thrived in with the Heat.”

Alongside both Doncic and Brunson in the Mavericks’ backcourt, Goran Dragic could be yet another facilitator this team can lean on for support outside of Doncic.

Luka is having to do everything right now for Dallas as they try and make it to the playoffs for a third consecutive season and this could ultimately be their downfall. Other guys on this roster are going to have to step up if they are to be successful and possibly win a playoff series.

Goran Dragic has been in the league for 14 seasons now and is a former All-Star talent that has been to the NBA Finals. He is more than capable of playing a secondary role in the backcourt for the Dallas Mavericks and is absolutely the kind of player this team should look to add.

If they can get him via a buyout agreement, then the Mavs should be all-in on signing Dragic, but they should not be willing to give up Dorian Finney-Smith to get the veteran for half a season.
