Does this trade make sense for the Dallas Mavericks?
While Tim Hardaway Jr. and Dorian Finney-Smith have certainly contributed in different, meaningful ways to the Dallas Mavericks this season, both players are nowhere close to the talent level of Gordon Hayward.
There are definitely some durability concerns with the veteran forward, but he has shown no signs of regression so far this year and is continuing to be a high-level scorer in Charlotte. Luka Doncic is a star and Kristaps Porzingis will give this team production, but who else is going to step up for them?
The Mavs are really missing that third star on their team right now, which is why they need someone like Gordon Hayward. He can score off-the-dribble, shoot, facilitate and most importantly, play without others having to make plays for him.
Luka Doncic literally does everything for this team right now and while they find success with him doing so, they really do not have any other players who can create for themselves. Maybe Jalen Brunson can at times off-the-bench, but they really need a guy like Gordon Hayward who can do just about anything they need him to do on offense.

Not giving up any draft compensation, this deal is definitely worthwhile for the Dallas Mavericks, but they are going to have an extremely hard time trying to convince the Hornets to make this trade.
