Does this trade make sense for the Sacramento Kings?

While Tim Hardaway Jr. could wind up fitting in well as an off-the-ball scorer next to De’Aaron Fox in Sacramento, this trade does not really seem to benefit them in any way. Hardaway’s production would not be more than that of Harrison Barnes right now and while Dorian Finney-Smith is a versatile player they could add on the wing, he is in the final year of his contract.

Expected to make at least $9M per year on his next deal, Finney-Smith would likely go elsewhere in free agency next offseason, leaving the Sacramento Kings without anything really valuable from this trade with Dallas.

Two second-round picks are something, but it is hard to imagine that the Kings would find any value with these either since the Dallas Mavericks are a playoff team and the two draft picks would likely fall anywhere from 45-60 in the 2022 and 2024 NBA Draft.

Trading Marvin Bagley III seems more of a possibility than trading Harrison Barnes at this point, but Sacramento should look to leverage both guys if they can. With no long-term futures tied to this franchise, the Kings could get the most value out of these guys right now.

Maybe they will keep Harrison Barnes around since he has one more year left on his contract and has been one of their better scoring weapons this season, but the Kings have nothing to gain from keeping Marvin Bagley III.

He does not want to be there and they are not going to try and re-sign him in the offseason, so they might as well try to get anything they can for the former second overall pick.

This trade does not really make the Kings better now or in the future and at the expense of smaller, less expensive contracts, they would be absorbing Tim Hardaway Jr.’s long-term contract, something that would be very unfavorable to this team moving forward.
