Does this trade make sense for the San Antonio Spurs?
Moving Dejounte Murray at this time makes little to no sense for the San Antonio Spurs and unless they are getting too much value to turn down, they are not going to be trading their young guard. He is arguably the best player on their roster and given that he is still young, Murray could be the Spurs’ lead point guard for at least the next decade, assuming he stays healthy.
Continuing to grow as an all-around force in their backcourt, Dejounte Murray is really starting to play like the top-tier pick many thought he was in 2016. He fell to the end of the first round that year, but Murray is starting to put his name in the conversation for Most Improved Player.
As mentioned before, he is a triple-double threat with the ball in his hands, but the one thing that separates him from other big-time talents at the point guard position in this league is the fact that Murray is an elite-level defender. He was on the 2017-18 All-Defensive Second Team and there is no reason he cannot achieve this feat again this season.
The Spurs have shown no willingness to trade Dejounte Murray this season, but according to The Athletic’s Zach Harper, Murray was “getable” around the 2021 NBA Draft this past July.

This could have simply been the Spurs taking calls on teams approaching them about Murray, but all-in-all, there has been trade interest around the league in the young point guard before.
This will not change around the trade deadline and if the Spurs are not where they want to be record-wise, they could absolutely listen to all offers coming their way for any player on their roster. The Spurs are in a weird spot right now because they do not have an All-Star talent like many teams around the NBA and their future seems cloudy.
San Antonio has always been one of the top-tier teams in the league, but they are now one of the youngest teams in the league with a lot of guys who are still trying to carve out their role in the league.
Dejounte Murray certainly stands out on their roster right now, so unless they are getting a ton of value, they are most likely going to keep him as the face of their rebuild next to the likes of Derrick White and Keldon Johnson.

Marcus Smart, Aaron Nesmith and two first-round picks is certainly something to consider for the Spurs, but this trade would not really put them in a better position to win now or in the future than they are currently at. For that reason is why the Spurs should not pursue this trade with Boston.
