How This Trade Impacts San Antonio Spurs
If the San Antonio Spurs decide they want to retool their roster, Dejounte Murray could be the player that they look to trade. He would likely bring back the best package, as he is in the midst of a career season.
Murray is becoming an excellent two-way player, stuffing the stat sheet for the Spurs. With their selection of point guard Josh Primo, the youngest prospect in the 2021 NBA Draft class, San Antonio could have their replacement for Murray already waiting in the wings.
Murray hasn’t been named to an All-Star game yet, but it is hard to imagine the Spurs taking what equates to spare parts for them. San Antonio will need to be genuinely enticed.
Kemba Walker isn’t the same player he once was. He would be a solid mentor for Primo to learn from and is signed at a reasonable price through 2023. But as the headliner of a deal for Murray, he doesn’t cut it.

At a minimum, the Spurs should be expecting back a first and second-round pick, especially if the players coming back are as underwhelming as in this package. Including Obi Toppin in a deal as opposed to a player like Kevin Knox II makes this a deal at least worth listening to.
