How This Trade Impacts San Antonio Spurs
The San Antonio Spurs are currently stuck in the middle. They have to decide which direction that they want to take the team in. Will they rebuild and start tearing things down? Or will they make a deal to bolster the roster and try getting competitive again in the Western Conference?
As long as Gregg Popovich remains head coach, the team is going to do what they can to remain competitive. If the opportunity arises to acquire a talent such as Kyrie Irving at a discounted price, they will do it.
Irving would be immediately eligible for the Spurs as there are no vaccine mandates in San Antonio. He would also give San Antonio some star power to help get the team back on track.
The Spurs had been linked to Ben Simmons, but Irving would be a more impactful player right now. He doesn’t have the ceiling Simmons does but would help San Antonio win more games now with their current roster.

Irving would be the focal point of the offensive attack, giving Popovich a go-to scorer each night. He doesn’t have the defensive presence of Dejounte Murray, but the Spurs have always had excellent schemes on that end of the court. They could find a way to fight in Irving that wouldn’t be too detrimental to the team.
Thaddeus Young is someone the Spurs are going to end up trading at some point, so including him to match salary makes sense. A first-round pick is steep, but the protection at least gives San Antonio some insurance in case things bottom out and they are among the worst teams in the league.
