How This Trade Impacts Cleveland Cavaliers

There isn’t necessarily a lot of reasons for the Cleveland Cavaliers to move on from Collin Sexton on the surface, but there are some compelling potential causes for such a move when looking deeper.

Darius Garland is the point guard of the future for the Cavaliers. Cleveland has a lot of confidence in his trajectory as not only a scorer but as a playmaker, which is an area where Sexton falls short. At that rate, if Garland is going to have the ball in his hands a lot, is it worth paying big money to Sexton?

In this particular NBA trade scenario, the Cavaliers would be deciding that it would not be the best course of action to hand out Sexton a massive contract extension.

After giving substantial deals to players like Jarrett Allen and Lauri Markkanen in the offseason while still having Kevin Love under contract, there isn’t a lot of room to give big deals to more players until the team can prove to actually win games.

Of course, Love will be off the books and gone from the team at some point. Regardless, the Cavaliers need to optimize their spending as a franchise for the future and if Sexton isn’t going to be viewed as that star caliber of player, getting a deal done makes sense.
