How This Trade Impacts San Antonio
The San Antonio Spurs lost a lot of offensive firepower in recent months. The team bought out LaMarcus Aldridge during the 2020-21 season, which started the process of offensive-minded veterans departing.
In free agency, the team saw DeMar DeRozan, Rudy Gay and Patty Mills sign elsewhere as well. DeRozan landed with the Chicago Bulls as part of a sign-and-trade, Gay signed with the Utah Jazz and Mills joined Aldridge with the Brooklyn Nets.
San Antonio signed Doug McDermott and Zach Collins in free agency, but they do not have the scoring prowess any of the players who departed do. That is where Collin Sexton could really help the Spurs.
Sexton averaged a career-high 24.3 points per game last season. He does it from every level, as he relentlessly attacks the basket and is a good shooter. The Alabama product has an impressive career shooting split of .458/.385/.831 in three seasons.
LATEST NBA NEWS & RUMORS: Cavaliers Still Expected To Consider Collin Sexton Trade
While he can score the ball, his playmaking and point guard skills do need refining. While he may never become a true lead guard, he wouldn’t be under pressure to be with the Spurs as they have Dejounte Murray. Murray and Sexton would be a good backcourt combo and play off of each other well.
With Sexton in the fold, the Spurs’ offense would see a major boost. He has limitations defensively, but the scheme that Gregg Popovich runs has been able to compensate for less than stellar defenders in the past and should be able to do the same for Sexton. At least with him, San Antonio knows effort and energy will never be an issue.
LATEST NBA NEWS & RUMORS: Cavaliers Still Expected To Consider Collin Sexton Trade
Still only 22-years old, Sexton would fit the timeline for a Spurs team that looks to be closer to retool and rebuilding than being contenders. Trading a first-round pick in 2022 is a bit risky, but with the protections added, it makes it a little easier to stomach.
