New York Knicks Receive: F Thaddeus Young
San Antonio Spurs Receive: F Obi Toppin, F Kevin Knox II, UTA 2023 2nd Round Pick (via NYK), NYK 2025 2nd Round Pick

For the San Antonio Spurs to move Thaddeus Young, especially early on in the season, they will have to be getting a solid return and what they would get here from New York could fit that criterion.

Kevin Knox has been very underwhelming early on in his career, but Obi Toppin is definitely a key young talent that could fit in well with the rest of the Spurs young core.

Derrick White, Dejounte Murray, Lonnie Walker IV, and Keldon Johnson are all pretty versatile and athletic young talents on the Spurs roster, but the one whole this team has right now is in their frontcourt. Jakob Poeltl seems to be a player the Spurs like at the center position, but there are question marks at the power forward position.

Doug McDermott was a key signing for the Spurs this offseason there and they do have both Thaddeus Young and Al-Farouq Aminu, but adding Obi Toppin would give them a key talent to build with in their frontcourt.

If the Knicks are willing to trade last year’s Top-10 pick, then this could very well be a trade the San Antonio Spurs are interested in making.

Heading into the 2021-22 season, there are definitely some heavy expectations for the Knicks after finishing as the 4-seed last season, but they seem to still be missing something.

A core of Kemba Walker, Evan Fournier, Julius Randle, and R.J. Barrett is definitely threatening in the Eastern Conference, but if they were to beef up their frontcourt depth with Thaddeus Young, they would be one of the most complete teams in the league.

Not to mention, they would be one of the deepest teams in terms of experienced talents that can play 20+ minutes per game.

Trading Obi Toppin may not be something that the Knicks front-office is too keen on, especially after drafting him 8th overall last year, but his upside is limited as he sits behind Julius Randle in the team’s depth chart. Moving him could open the door for New York to advance further in the postseason.
