Ja Morant calls himself a top 5 point guard in the league
One of the bright, young stars of the NBA is former Rookie of the Year Ja Morant, who is getting ready to begin his third season in the league with the Memphis Grizzlies. Last season, Morant was the key to the Grizzlies not only locking up a playoff spot, but winning Game 1 of their first-round series against the Jazz in Salt Lake City, something not many teams have been able to do over the years.
They did go on to lose this series, but Memphis is way ahead of schedule in their rebuilding process and GM Zach Kleiman has done a fantastic job in assembling this young team over the years. He stayed busy this offseason too, flipping players and draft picks around for more young talent and future assets to play with.
The future is extremely bright for this Grizzlies franchise, but Ja Morant seems to believe that he can win with the team and exceed expectations right now. When talking with Michael Scotto of HoopsHype, Morant said he was a “Top-5” point guard in this league next to Damian Lillard, Stephen Curry, Chris Paul, and Russell Westbrook, in no set order.
Last season, Morant averaged 19.1 points, 4.0 rebounds, 7.4 assists, and shot 44.9% from the floor, and in the postseason against the Jazz, he was spectacular, averaging 30.2 points, 4.8 rebounds, 8.2 assists, and shot 48.7% from the floor.

Every time the young guard takes the court, he is getting better and better, so he is definitely not far off from being a top point guard in this league, but it is very generous to say he is a Top-5 point guard in this league after just two seasons.
Ja Morant is definitely a Top-10 point guard and it is great to hear how confident he is in his abilities, but at this point, until the Grizzlies advance far in the postseason, it is hard to say that Morant is a Top-5 point guard in this league. However, he could very well be by the end of the 2021-22 season if he continues to take on a bigger role and improve in Memphis.
