Why Dallas Mavericks Make This Trade

There has been a lot of attention given to the fact that the Dallas Mavericks were looking to reshape their roster with more ball-handlers. Luka Doncic has a lot of pressure on him as the sole offensive creator for the Mavericks, but that creator doesn’t have to be in the form of a backcourt player.

That is where the focus has been, with Goran Dragic being mentioned frequently. But Thaddeus Young would give the Mavericks offense a different look, like someone that can initiate some offense from the frontcourt.

Young played a point-forward role for the Chicago Bulls last season, averaging 4.3 assists per game. That extra playmaking would benefit the Mavericks, as Doncic was too often the sole offensive creator on the court.

Young will also give Dallas a strong backup option at power forward to Kristaps Porzingis. Porzingis has had some well-documented struggles with injuries, so having a player capable of stepping into the starting lineup at a moment’s notice, such as Young, would strengthen the team.

The former Georgia Tech product could also share the court with Porzingis in some instances. Young would help cover up some of his defensive deficiencies, as he has the versatility to defend multiple positions on the court.
