Dallas Mavericks Receive: F Thaddeus Young
San Antonio Spurs Receive: C Dwight Powell, G Tyrell Terry, 2022 Second-Round Pick
The Dallas Mavericks and San Antonio Spurs are heading in two different directions. The Mavericks want to keep upgrading the roster around Luka Doncic, while the Spurs are looking at retooling their roster.
The Spurs don’t have too much use for Thaddeus Young, a steady veteran that can help on both ends of the court. As a result, he is traded for the second time this offseason. So, it makes sense for them to make a deal like this one.
The Spurs acquired young from the Chicago Bulls in the DeMar DeRozan sign-and-trade. In addition to Young, the Spurs landed Al-Farouq Aminu, a future first-round pick and two future second-round picks.
Young is being re-routed to the Mavericks, and the Spurs get back Tyrell Terry, Dwight Powell, and a 2022 second-round pick.

Terry is an intriguing prospect as the Mavericks used the first pick in the second round on him in 2020. Powell is used to match salary but could slot into the Spurs’ frontcourt rotation as a power forward/center combo player. A second-round pick is always nice to have to facilitate other deals.
How does this trade impact both teams? Let’s take a look at why they would do it, starting with the Mavericks.
