For years, the Minnesota Timberwolves have been near the bottom of the league standings and they really have not turned things around recently. They do have key talents in Anthony Edwards and D’Angelo Russell on their roster, but the clock is ticking for Karl-Anthony Towns.
The former No. 1 overall pick is going to be turning 26-years-old soon and since entering the league, the Timberwolves have gone 185-279. This is not impressive by any means and if they do not get Towns some more help, it is very realistic to imagine that the All-Star big man could request a trade in the coming year.
Towns is under contract through the 2023-24 season and still has $101.5M remaining on his contract, but should he become available in trade talks, he will become the most sought-after player on the market.
Trading for Ben Simmons seems to be the move the Timberwolves want to make and this is the move they need to make in order to keep Karl-Anthony Towns in Minnesota with the Timberwolves long-term.

He does not necessarily want to leave the Minnesota Timberwolves, but at the same time, every top-tier player in this league wants to win games and contend for a championship. If Towns cannot do this with the Timberwolves, then going somewhere else to create his legacy in this league could be worthwhile in his eyes.
With a ton of young talent on their roster and a handful of draft assets over the next few years, the Minnesota Timberwolves should definitely view themselves as being in a position to win games right now.
Leveraging talents like D’Angelo Russell and Malik Beasley must be what management is willing to make, especially to appease Karl-Anthony Towns and his “wants” moving forward.
