Does this trade make sense for Minnesota Timberwolves?
Giving up Karl-Anthony Towns may not be the worst move for the Minnesota Timberwolves to make, but if they were to do so, they would likely be in the “same boat” as the Philadelphia 76ers in terms of what they want for Ben Simmons.
Towns is a 2x All-Star at the center position and when he is healthy, he is one of the most versatile and dynamic centers in the league.
Ben Simmons, James Wiseman, and Danny Green is definitely a ton of both current and future value, but at the same time, this is a lateral move for the Timberwolves.
Trading Towns and getting Simmons really is a “wash” in terms of outgoing and incoming talent and if anything, the Timberwolves would get worse offensively since Simmons is a liability on the scoring-end of things.

Danny Green is now 34-years-old and nothing more than a veteran player that can help a team win right now, but the Minnesota Timberwolves would still not be close to a contending team, so his value is very minimal without Towns paired with Simmons.
As for James Wiseman, he would be Karl-Anthony Towns’ long-term replacement, but again, he is a long-term project that the Timberwolves would have and Wiseman would not be a guy who can help them win games right now.

Given their interest in Ben Simmons and the fact that they are an overall weak team in terms of depth, this trade does bring some very solid value to the Timberwolves organization, but they do not really gain anything from moving their best pure talent.
Karl-Anthony Towns is a fantastic young player in this league and pairing him up with another All-Star talent needs to be the Timberwolves’ priority right now.
They get nothing out of moving him and in doing so, Minnesota would be setting themselves back years in their long rebuilding process, which is why this trade does not make too much sense for the Minnesota Timberwolves.
