Kris Dunn – Memphis Grizzlies
Since being drafted 5th overall in 2016, Kris Dunn’s career has been spiraling downhill not only because of some injury concerns, but because Dunn has shot just 30.5% from deep over the course of his now 5-year NBA career.
After signing with the Hawks last offseason and playing in just 4 games with them during the 2020-21 season, Dunn was traded to the Boston Celtics this offseason and then moved to the Memphis Grizzlies with Carsen Edwards for Juancho Hernangomez.
Now, the 27-year-old point guard seems to be on his “last leg” and is just looking to prove himself at this point. Kris Dunn has always been regarded as being an athletic guard with solid defensive tendencies, so the Dallas Mavericks going after him for basically nothing could actually work out in their favor.
After his rookie season with the Minnesota Timberwolves, Dunn was moved to the Chicago Bulls and played well there, averaging 10.7 points, 4.0 rebounds, 5.1 assists and 1.8 steals over the course of three seasons. If the Mavs can get this player and not the one who struggled in Minnesota, then they could absolutely find a “diamond in the rough” with Kris Dunn.

At this point, the Mavs roster is all but constructed for the 2021-22 season and if they are looking to find an experienced, relatively young backcourt player to fill the 15th spot on their roster, why not take a chance on Kris Dunn?
He is affordable, still has potential to grow and has proven to be a factor defensively, so in sporadic minutes off-the-bench here and there, the 6’3” point guard on the Grizzlies roster could be an excellent addition for the Mavericks in terms of backcourt depth.
Dallas is rumored to be interested in Frank Ntilikina as well, so he could possibly be a young, defensive-minded guard for them to target, but in terms of potential in their system when healthy, I would give a slight edge to Kris Dunn over Frank Ntilikina.

Dunn has proven to be a factor on both ends of the court when healthy during his time with the Bulls and if the Mavs can get a little bit of that player back, then they will have a reliable option next to Jalen Brunson and second-year guards Josh Green and Tyrell Terry on their bench.
