Why San Antonio Spurs Make This Trade
The San Antonio Spurs did a magnificent job extracting value out of DeMar DeRozan’s free agency pursuits. There was chatter that he would accept a significant pay decrease to play for a winning team. That didn’t end up happening, and the Spurs benefited greatly.
Turning DeRozan into Thaddeus Young, Al-Farouq Aminu, a future first-round pick and two future second-round picks, was excellent work by the front office. It is a deal that keeps on giving, as Young will net some good assets, such as with this trade involving the Dallas Mavericks.
In this deal, the Spurs get Tyrell Terry, a sought-after prospect in the 2020 draft class. The Mavericks selected him with the first pick in the second round, and he was thought to be one of the best shooting prospects that year.
In 13 games in the G League last season, Terry averaged 14.7 points, 5.1 rebounds, 3.2 assists, and 1.1 steals in 29.4 minutes per game. San Antonio is getting a solid prospect they will be able to develop further.

In this deal, Dwight Powell is used as a salary-filler but is a serviceable, high-energy big man that could provide San Antonio some good minutes in their frontcourt. He has two seasons remaining on his contract.
The 2022 second-round pick gives San Antonio yet another asset that they could use in future trades. The Spurs have their eyes on a bigger prize, such as Ben Simmons, and any young players and draft pick they acquire them another piece they can include in a deal for him.
