Does this trade make sense for the Dallas Mavericks?

Acquiring Goran Dragic would be a great move for the Dallas Mavericks because of Luka Doncic. These guys are playing together on Team Slovenia in the Olympics right now, and Dragic would be an excellent fit in the Mavs’ system.

They need a solid, reliable point guard, especially a guy like Dragic, a former All-Star. He has the capability not only to take on a lot of the scoring load, but he could take a lot of pressure off of Doncic to be Dallas’ only primary ball-handler.

Having Dragic and Doncic on the court together gives the Mavericks two main facilitators to play through, with guys like Tim Hardaway Jr., Dorian Finney-Smith, Maxi Kleber, and Kristaps Porzingis being around them. However, the question is whether or not they would want to take on all of Dragic’s $19.4M contract.

Dallas would put themselves in a better situation financially if the Raptors were to buy out Goran Dragic from his contract, and then the Mavs were able to sign him, but this does not seem like a realistic option, right now. Toronto does not want to be tied down financially to Dragic’s contract, which is the main reason they will most likely look to move him.

The logistics of a trade/buyout need to be figured out before anything else. Still, the Mavericks should definitely be interested in acquiring Goran Dragic, which they seem like. He is the perfect veteran point guard target for them this offseason and could definitely help them improve from the first-round playoff team they were last year.
