Dallas Mavericks

Luka Doncic is a generational type talent and is going to ascend into being the best player in the league at some point during his career, but the Mavericks are going to have to add talent around him if they are to be a real contender in the Western Conference. Right now, they are a playoff team, but to think they have what it takes to reach the Western Conference Finals is wishful thinking at the very least. 

While Kristaps Porzingis, Tim Hardaway Jr., and others are solid complementary pieces, the Mavs are still lacking firepower on their bench and are still in search of another All-Star-level talent. Eric Gordon may not be an All-Star-level talent, but he would solve the Mavericks’ problem of not having another reliable bench scorer. 

Adding Reggie Bullock and Sterling Brown this offseason will give the Mavericks more depth on the wing, so they may not need Gordon anymore, but he is definitely the mold of player they would want to add around the trade deadline in order to make a strong playoff push. 

His salary though really could end up being problematic for the Mavericks. Trading for Eric Gordon outright would still keep the Mavericks under the tax line, but since he is under contract well past the 2021-22 season, Dallas would have virtually no room to go after other high-level talents in future offseasons.

After just extending Luka Doncic long-term and doing the same with Tim Hardaway Jr., the Mavericks do not really have much room for error in terms of adding other high-level talents, which is why trading for Gordon may not be the best thing for them to do at this time.
