Does this trade make sense for Dallas Mavericks?
Trading away Dwight Powell seems like something that is inevitable at this point and giving him up to add Marvin Bagley III definitely makes sense, even if Bagley acts as a “one-year rental” type of player. Powell has no long-term value to this team and is only taking up cap space, which is one of the main reasons why this deal makes sense for the Dallas Mavericks.
As stated earlier, Dwight Powell is set to make $22.1M over the next two seasons, which makes him someone the Mavs should want to move since he is going to underplay his value, especially with a ton of other centers already on this roster at a cheaper price.
Being able to move Powell for Bagley gives the Mavericks a better player to contend with this year in their frontcourt, as well as an extra $10M-11M to have next offseason. Now this money would likely be utilized as payment for Doncic’s mega contract extension, but overall, it is money that Dallas doesn’t have right now and desperately needs.
Adding a versatile big man like Marvin Bagley III opens up the Mavs’ offense a little bit more and the best part about adding him on offense is that he is great in pick-and-roll situations, which Dallas utilized a lot of last season with Luka Doncic as their primary ball-handler.

Given Luka’s craftiness and passing abilities, Bagley is the perfect power-forward to have, but who knows how Dallas will play this season with Jason Kidd as their head coach.
A lot would need to happen to make this trade a possible reality for the Dallas Mavericks, but if Marvin Bagley III is available near the trade deadline, he is definitely worth taking a swing at from the Mavs’ point of view.
