Why San Antonio Spurs Do This Trade
The main priority for the San Antonio Spurs has been to remain competitive as head coach Gregg Popovich winds down his coaching career. Without the necessary talent to do so, the team has been stuck in a situation where there isn’t an outlook to compete.
DeMar DeRozan decided not to stick around and is now a member of the Chicago Bulls. When considering Kawhi Leonard is long gone and there is no clear-cut franchise player in town anymore, it’s time for the Spurs to embrace gaining assets to be able to trade for one.
The trade route will be only clean way for the Spurs to be able to acquire the necessary franchise player they need to be in a position to compete at a higher level.
Trading a veteran like Thaddeus Young who is on an expiring contract is a prime example of the type of move the Spurs need to consider making in order to add to their ‘war chest’ of assets.

In this trade scenario, the Spurs would land a first round pick in the 2022 NBA Draft. A full blown tear down like the Oklahoma City Thunder wouldn’t be the needed approach if the team can continue to gain assets by trading for players who aren’t long-term fits.
