Why Toronto Raptors Do This Trade

Deciding whether or not to start a rebuild and retooling a roster is a tough decision. But, the Toronto Raptors decide the best time to do that is now, as they part ways with Pascal Siakam in this deal.

It will be a tough pill for fans to swallow, as Siakam has developed nicely during his tenure in Toronto. It is also one more player from their 2019 NBA Championship roster gone, as long-time point guard Kyle Lowry also departed this offseason. OG Anunoby, Chris Boucher and Fred VanVleet would be the only players left from that team only two years later.

However, the writing is on the wall when it comes to Siakam’s future with the team. They used the No. 4 pick on Florida State power forward, Scottie Barnes. His arrival should only make the trade rumors that were surrounding Siakam louder.

While his offensive game needs polish, Barnes has a high ceiling as a point forward. He could be the centerpiece of the franchise should his shooting and scoring develop and catch up to the rest of his skills.

In the return package, the Raptors are shoring up their center spot with Myles Turner. One of the premier rim protectors in the NBA, Turner can also help space the floor, knocking down 35.2 percent of his career 3-point attempts. He would be an excellent fit in the starting five, giving Toronto above-average defenders at all five spots.

T.J. Warren is a wild card for Toronto. If he can get healthy and start playing as he did in the Orlando Bubble, they are getting an excellent wing player for their rotation. If not, he is on an expiring contract, helping clear the books for a team retooling.

The 2023 first-round pick is an excellent asset. The 2023 NBA Draft is expected to be a strong class because it is when high school players will be allowed to declare. So, it is essentially a ‘double draft’ as you’ll have the regular college prospects infused with high schoolers as well.

If you want to stockpile extra picks in any year, 2023 is it. There will be a lot of talent throughout both rounds given the rule change occurring.
