Robert Covington – Portland Trail Blazers – 2021-22 Salary: $12,975,471
The Boston Celtics have flirted with the idea of possibly adding Robert Covington a couple of times, but over the years, they have never been willing to meet the price to trade for him. Now, with Portland facing a “make-or-break” scenario this season, they could be willing to move Covington for draft picks should things start to go downhill for them.
Now entering his 9th season in the league, Robert Covington has made a name for himself being a frontcourt asset who can not only defend numerous positions, but one that can stretch the floor and knock down perimeter shots as well. For his career, Covington has shot 35.9% from three-point range and last season alone, he shot 37.9% from deep.
Pairing that with the fact that he is one of the best all-around defenders in the league, who is oftentimes overlooked, the veteran forward could be a great addition for the Celtics as a secondary talent who can be a menace defending with Marcus Smart and Al Horford.
Given that he is owed $12.9M next season and is entering the final year of his contract, the Celtics could utilize their $17.1M TPE on him and not have to worry about paying him in future seasons since he would basically be a “rental player” for them as they look to make a deep playoff run once again.

What Portland would want for Covington remains a big question, as he is currently not on the trade block, but if things begin to go downhill for them, they could look to trade him for a future first-round pick or a young talent like Aaron Nesmith or Romeo Langford. If Boston is willing to meet this price and the Blazers are willing to trade their veteran, then this deal could definitely work out in the Celtics’ favor as they look to add more reliable talent to their roster.
