Does this trade make sense for the New York Knicks?
Myles Turner is obviously the best center the New York Knicks could add to a Tom Thibodeau-run defense, but is he really needed? When healthy, Mitchell Robinson has done his job perfectly for the Knicks and they just re-signed both Nerlens Noel and Taj Gibson, so they really do not need Myles Turner right now.
Do they “want” him? Absolutely. Do they “need” him? No they do not.
This is basically the scenario we are looking at right now with the Knicks and there really is no need for them to go “over the top” and trade away young pieces like Robinson, Toppin and a first-round pick next year.
When he is on the court, the Knicks believe that Mitchell Robinson could be a real x-factor for them in the frontcourt next to Julius Randle and they feel the same about Obi Toppin as he prepares for Year 2 in the league. Toppin’s Summer League performances have been over-the-top fantastic and he is only going to continue to get better defensively as he learns from some of the veterans on this roster, so New York could really cost themselves by trading him away.

With Julius Randle, R.J. Barrett, Evan Fournier and Kemba Walker, the New York Knicks finally have a strong core in place with plenty of experienced and young depth around them, so the best move they could make right now is no move at all. Adding Myles Turner definitely improves their roster now, but would probably end up hurting them long-term.
