Does this trade make sense for the Indiana Pacers?
Lonzo Ball could be a really strong fit next to Domantas Sabonis, T.J. Warren and Caris LeVert, but I am not really sure why the Pacers would make this move and give up Malcolm Brogdon. Trading away Jeremy Lamb is one thing and remains a high possibility this offseason, but why move Brogdon just to free up cap space?
He was dealing with injuries during the 2020-21 season, but Malcolm Brogdon averaged 21.2 points, 5.3 rebounds, 5.9 assists and shot 38.8% from three-point range in 56 games with the Pacers. This was arguably the best season of Brogdon’s five-year NBA career and if they were offering him for Simmons, it would make no sense why they would offer him for Lonzo Ball.
In fact, there is really no reason for the Pacers to go after Lonzo Ball because their roster is fine how it is. Staying healthy has been the main problem in Indiana over the years, not the talent they have on their roster.
If the Indiana Pacers can remain healthy during the 2021-22 season, there is no reason why they cannot finish as the 4-seed or 5-seed in the Eastern Conference, trailing the likes of the Nets, 76ers, Bucks and maybe another team who puts together a great year like the Heat.

Indiana has the roster to be able to contend with any team in this league, but injuries have limited their success over the years. It is a big “if” at this point, but if they remain healthy, they really could be the “comeback team of the year,” in the league next season. Moving Brogdon for Ball is a bad move for the Pacers.
