Does this trade make sense for the San Antonio Spurs?
Right now, the San Antonio Spurs are in a very awkward position as a franchise because while they have some talented young players, this team is not considered a threat anymore. Bringing DeMar DeRozan back definitely helps aid the Spurs chances of being a playoff team, but at the end of the day, this organization is on the verge of rebuilding and they need to realize this.
The only question for them is if getting rid of Dejounte Murray and/or Derrick Whtie, arguably the two best young talents, makes sense. Quite honestly, keeping both of these guys makes the and then using the 12th pick in the draft to add another athletic, versatile talent to their roster makes the most sense.
Acquiring Mitchell Robinson and Obi Toppin, plus the 19th pick in the draft, definitely brings value to San Antonio, but they do not really gain anything by trading away Dejounte Murray in this deal.
Basically they would be helping the Knicks while taking a chance on themselves as an organization to “hit the nail on the head” with the 12th and 19th overall picks.

The idea of trading Murray definitely seems like something that would be of value to the Spurs, but I really do not see how/if they could get more value than this from the Knicks. Dejounte Murray is a very talented, young player, but he is not going to be viewed as a “franchise-altering player,” or a “final piece” type of player league-wide.
This is why the Spurs are much better off holding onto the young talents that they have right now and looking to build around them for the foreseeable future.
Murray and White are only going to get better playing together with time, which is why the Spurs should just be patient and embrace the rebuilding process that is coming their way. Trading Dejounte Murray to the Knicks definitely helps New York, but does not really help the Spurs.
