Does this trade make sense for the Cleveland Cavaliers?
If the Cavaliers are to draft Evan Mobley with the intent of making him their big man of the future, then they should absolutely try to execute a sign-and-trade for Jarrett Allen. In this deal with the Mavs, they actually get a fair amount of compensation in return for the young center.
Dwight Powell does not bring much to the table in terms of being a building block the Cavaliers would want, but he is on an expiring contract and Cleveland would not have any long-term liability tied to him. Not to mention, the Cavs also get Tyrell Terry and a future first-round pick to make up for Powell’s lack of value.
The last piece of this trade the Cavaliers would receive is Josh Rchardson, who is actually a really solid “3-and-D” type of player. He had a down year in Dallas during the 2020-21 season, averaging just 12.1 points, 3.3 rebounds and shooting 33% from three-point range, but the Cavaliers could really use some shooting depth on the wing.
This organization is in no position to contend for a championship, yet alone a playoff spot right now, so the best thing the Cavaliers can do is to continue gaining value and figuring out their long-term plan. Both Powell and Richardson have one year remaining on their contracts, so Cleveland would not really have to worry about even more long-term contracts on their roster.

The Kevin Love contract is really hurting them in terms of long-term success right now and has brought up questions about the future of this Cavs’ backcourt, but by trading Jarrett Allen in a sign-and-trade, the Cavaliers would not have these questions anymore.
Cleveland could extend Sexton long-term, they would have a strong replacement center in Evan Mobley and they would be adding future value with the draft picks they receive and a young guard like Tyrell Terry.

Drafting Evan Mobley would be a great idea by the Cavaliers and with Jarrett Allen being a restricted free agent, executing a sign-and-trade involving him seems highly likely. Again, everything depends on the NBA Draft though and we should learn a lot about the Cleveland Cavaliers’ future depending on what they decide to do with this 3rd overall pick.
