Dallas Mavericks Receive: C Jarrett Allen (via sign-and-trade)

Cleveland Cavaliers Receive: C Dwight Powell, G/F Josh Richardson ($11.6M Player Option), G Tyrell Terry, DAL 2022 2nd Round Pick, DAL 2025 1st Round Pick (Top-5 Protected)

If Dallas is going to go after Jarrett Allen via a trade, then they will have to be prepared to give up quite a bit of assets. The Cleveland Cavaliers are not going to really want a player like Dwight Powell, but he is in the final year of his contract and the Dallas Mavericks can offer up more assets in order to compensate for Powell’s lack of value.

As a result, adding on a future first-round pick and a young talent like Tyrell Terry could even out this trade for the Cavaliers. Terry was drafted 31st overall in 2020 and while he did not see the court much for Dallas during the 2020-21 season, he is a young guard that presents a big upside.

The biggest part of Tyrell Terry’s game that stands out is his ability to shoot from deep. At Stanford, he was known for being an all-around offensive playmaker and a threat to shoot the ball as soon as he crossed halfcourt. Offense is what comes to mind with this young guard and the Cavaliers could definitely use some extra scoring help, especially in their backcourt since they do not really have anybody besides Collin Sexton and Darius Garland there.

In order for this trade to work though between the Mavericks and Cavaliers, a couple things are going to need to happen, the first being Cleveland drafting Evan Mobley third overall. If they draft Mobley, then they will be open for business in terms of talking about Jarrett Allen because they likely are not going to pair the young big man with Allen, as it just does not make much sense for them in terms of long-term effect on this team.

The Cavaliers drafting Evan Mobley means that they will want him to be their big man of the future, which leaves no room for Jarrett Allen. The next step for this trade to possibly work and make sense revolves around the contract situations of not just Allen, but Josh Richardson as well. Richardson has an $11.6M player option for the 2021-22 season that he would likely have to opt into in order for Cleveland to be interested in this offer.

On top of Richardson’s contract situation, the Cavaliers would also have to have a deal in place for Jarrett Allen’s contract. Somewhere in the range of $20M per year would make sense in order for this trade to work, but again, will the Mavericks really want to have Allen under contract for 3-4 years at $18M-$20M per season?

There is a lot that goes into this trade proposal between the Dallas Mavericks and Cleveland Cavaliers and the underlying question that remains is if this trade truly makes sense for both teams. The 2021 NBA Draft will say a lot about what direction Cleveland is trending towards and if they do select Evan Mobley, then they could be willing to move on from Jarrett Allen after just one year.
