Denver Nuggets

The Denver Nuggets are in a really interesting situation this offseason because while they do not really have any needs as a franchise, Jamal Murray is going to likely miss the first-half of the 2021-22 season.

Murray suffered a torn ACL in his left knee on April 12 and a normal recovery time of eight months would put him looking at late-December 2021 or January 2022 as potential return dates to the Nuggets’ lineup.

The fact of the matter is that the Nuggets will not have their All-Star caliber guard for the first portion of the season and they will need to figure out how to replace him. Austin Rivers did an excellent job coming in late in the year for them and Monte Morris also stepped up, but they could look to bring in a guy like Reggie Jackson who can play multiple roles in this offense.

Not only can he attack his opponents off-the-dribble, but Jackson could really thrive in the pick-and-roll sets the Nuggets run with Nikola Jokic. This “two-man game” they have been known to play over the years has been very effective in breaking down their opponent’s defense and given Jackson’s explosive abilities attacking the rim, he could prove to be an asset for the Nuggets.

The only concern for the Nuggets though as it pertains to signing Reggie Jackson is if they will even have enough cap room to go after him. Denver is already $13.3M over the projected salary cap for the 2021-22 season and with Will Barton possibly opting out of his contract, they could turn their attention to re-sign him, ultimately leaving them with no room for any players not willing to take on a minimum contract.

The fit and situation with the Nuggets pertaining to Jamal Murray being out definitely brings an intriguing element to possibly signing Reggie Jackson, but they are not really in the most favorable of cap situations right now.

Jackson played really well in the playoffs for the Clippers this year and has earned himself a lot of money in doing so, which could make him too expensive for the Nuggets to potentially go after in NBA free agency this offseason.
