Does this trade make sense for the Oklahoma City Thunder?
OG Anunoby is a really solid two-way player that can play numerous positions on the court and acquiring yet another top draft pick would be huge for the Thunder, but there is really no reason for them to move on from Shai Gilgeous-Alexander.
They have talked so highly of him over the years and when they had Chris Paul during the 2019-20 season, they began grooming Gilgeous-Alexander to be their next star player. He has everything teams are looking for in a modern day guard given his length and scoring abilities, so why would they want to give him up?
Moving on from their young guard right now makes absolutely no sense for the Oklahoma City Thunder unless they were to get a player like Damian Lillard or Bradley Beal in return. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander may not be a “household” name yet, but it is just going to be a matter of years because this kid is a star in the league.
The Thunder are rebuilding with him as the face of their franchise right now, so any moves they would potentially make to trade him could set them back big time. With 6 total draft picks in 2021 and a young, talented core already in place, Oklahoma City is going to be special moving forward with Shai Gilgeous-Alexander as their leader.

Again, it would have to take a lot for GM Sam Presti and this Thunder front-office to let go of him, which is why the Raptors probably could not get a deal done for SGA. Even if they were to offer Pascal Siakam instead of Anunoby, the Thunder would probably still decline this trade. That is how high they are on Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and how much they believe in him to be their next All-Star guard.
