Trail Blazers’ defense was one of the worst in the league this year
Offensively, the Portland Trail Blazers have consistently been one of the best teams in the league, but defensively, they are one of the worst teams in the league. They gave up 114.3 points per game this season, ranking them 23rd in the league in this category, and they allowed their opponents to shoot 47.3% from the floor, which ranked only behind the Pistons, Rockets, Timberwolves, Cavaliers and Kings, all of which missed the playoffs this season.
If Portland’s going to be a true championship contender, they may not need to be the best defensive team in the league but they will have to make strides to become a Top-15 defensive team in the league. With their current roster, this is not possible, which is why trading for an All-Defensive guy like Ben Simmons makes sense.
For the second consecutive year, Ben Simmons was voted to the All-Defense First Team and has been deemed one of the best defenders in the entire league. His presence on the defensive-end of the court would do wonders for Portland, especially with them having Robert Covington as well, who is an underrated defender in his own right.
This Blazers team needs to find ways to improve defensively and adding Ben Simmons to their roster would instantly make them a Top-15 defensive team in the league.

Adding him to their roster gives the Trail Blazers a guy that can guard any team’s best player and be someone that can help make everybody else on this roster better defensively.
With Simmons being 7-feet tall, Jusef Nurkic being 7-feet tall and then having Robert Covington at 6’7”/6’8”, the Blazers all of a sudden would have length and size to be able to defend almost every single team in this league.
