Dallas Mavericks Receive: G Marcus Smart
Boston Celtics Receive: G Josh Richardson, G Jalen Brunson, and 2025 first-round pick
Of course, the trade begins with Marcus Smart headed to the Mavericks as the Celtics finally part ways with the former sixth overall pick in the 2014 NBA Draft. Smart has one year remaining on his current contract and he’s set to carry a cap hit of $14.3 million in 2021-22. The aspect of Smart’s contract expiring after next season is one that could alter his trade value this offseason.
For the Celtics, they would be getting Josh Richardson as part of the deal that sends Smart to the Mavericks. Richard has a player option this summer, which means that he would have to opt-into the $11.6 million he’s slated to make next season, or Dallas would have to sign-and-trade him. Bringing Richardson in on a sign-and-trade could be tricky, especially if the Celtics don’t view him as a long-term contributor on the roster.

To sweeten the deal, the Mavericks reluctantly trade Jalen Brunson to the Celtics. Brunson was reportedly off-limits for teams ahead of this year’s NBA trade deadline, but if Dallas wants Smart, then Brunson may need to be included in the package.
The 24-year-old point guard is also entering the final year of his contract, but he’s expected to garner a decent deal next offseason due to his improved play in recent seasons. On top of that, the Celtics would get a future first-round pick from the Mavericks.
Let’s take a look a look at how this NBA trade scenario centered around Marcus Smart would impact both the Boston Celtics and Dallas Mavericks.
