The NBA offseason hasn’t officially begun yet, but the Boston Celtics have been a busy team already. It all began with Danny Ainge stepping down from his executive role in the front office, only for Brad Stevens to replace him. The Celtics also traded Kemba Walker to the Oklahoma City Thunder, leaving a void at their point guard position. Following the decision to trade Walker, Marcus Smart has been a name popping up in trade rumors.

Smart has been a player that Boston has held onto dearly over the years, but he’s entering the final year of his current contract next season. With that in mind, the Celtics may elect to deal the veteran guard in hopes to improve their roster around Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown.

Amid the NBA trade rumors of a possible Marcus Smart move, the Dallas Mavericks have continually been listed as a potential landing spot. While the Mavericks don’t have much draft capital to include in a trade, they do have a few players that could be useful for the Celtics to acquire.

Despite Boston being a possible destination for Kristaps Porzingis, Dallas would likely prefer to use Porzingis in a separate trade in the offseason. The acquisition of Al Horford in the Kemba Walker trade has eliminated the need to acquire a stretch-five for the Celtics.

At the same time, it would be tough to make the money work on both sides if Porzingis is involved. Taking that into account, here’s the best trade that the Mavericks could offer the Celtics — without Porzingis included — in the coming months.

Let’s take a look at an NBA trade scenario centered around Marcus Smart that would send him from the Boston Celtics to the Dallas Mavericks.
