2021 NBA DRAFT

Owned Draft Picks: NONE

After drafting Precious Achiuwa 20th overall in the 2020 NBA Draft, the Miami Heat will not be able to follow up and add another young prospect to their roster this year as a result of having no draft picks in the 2021 NBA Draft.

The Heat’s 2021 1st Round Pick has bounced around from team to team over the years and was originally traded by Miami to the Phoenix Suns in 2015 when they originally acquired Goran Dragic. Since then, Dragic has played in 391 games with the Heat, averaging 16.2 points, 5.2 assists and shooting 45.7% from the floor as one of their primary core players.

Miami also does not have their second-round pick in this year’s draft as a result of trading it along with guard Brian Roberts to the Portland Trail Blazers in 2016 in exchange for cash considerations.

With no picks in this year’s draft, the Miami Heat will not be able to add onto their core of young talent, nor will they be able to leverage any draft picks in potential trade packages for more high-level talent. The Heat were involved in a lot of trade rumors this season, particularly centered around Kyle Lowry at the trade deadline, but they were unwilling to include Tyler Herro in any trade proposals.

Herro, the Heat’s 13th overall selection in the 2019 draft is a player that Miami is extremely high on and has not been willing to budge on in trade talks over the last year or so. There were rumors that the Heat were unwilling to even include Tyler Herro in trade talks for James Harden, which is crazy if true!

Tyler Herro has been a solid player for the Heat in his two years in the league, averaging 14.3 points and shooting 37.5% from three-point range, but he is not an All-Star caliber player like the Heat believe he is… at least at this point in his young career! The 21-year-old guard really struggled near the end of the season, which is why he could ultimately be involved in trade talks this offseason, but it is still highly unlikely that the Heat let him go.

There is a possibility that Miami could look to “buy” their way into the second-round of this year’s draft by trading away cash considerations for a draft pick, but a lot of the Heat’s attention will be on free agency this year, so they will likely remain quiet on draft night unless a great trade proposal comes their way.
