Does this trade make sense for the Houston Rockets?
While the Houston Rockets would probably like to get any sort of draft pick for either D.J. Augustin or Danuel House Jr., they would probably be alright with getting Derrick Jones Jr. As mentioned before, the Rockets are looking to add young, versatile talents to their roster, which is exactly the type of player Jones Jr. is.
The 24-year-old forward made a name for himself last year winning the 2020 Slam Dunk Contest over Aaron Gordon and due to his extremely athletic abilities, he earned a two-year, $18.9M contract with Portland last offseason.

After only averaging 22.7 minutes per game though and being out of the rotation late in the season, the Blazers will likely be looking to move DJJ this offseason and his $9.72M salary, assuming he opts into his player option for next season.
Houston is the perfect destination for Jones Jr. because he cannot only get playing time to try and prove himself, but he could become one of the leaders of the Rockets given all of the young talent on this roster.
Heading into next season, the Rockets are going to be looking to trade away some of their older talents in Eric Gordon, Avery Bradley and D.J. Augustin, which is why Derrick Jones Jr. could carve out a permanent role on this Rockets’ roster.
Houston really does not have much to lose either by making this trade, which is why this is an offseason trade proposal that they would definitely be interested in.
