Does this trade make sense for the Houston Rockets?
The Houston Rockets would receive a pair of talented players while dishing away an expiring contract. At the very early stage of a complete rebuild, finding value for established players is the best course of action in order to pull off the ideal process, especially in the loaded Western Conference.
It remains to be seen if the Rockets will end up landing the top pick in the 2021 NBA Draft but they do have the best odds of any team to do so. If Houston has that pan out, they will be very likely to use it to select Cade Cunningham. This is where the particular return would be less than favorable for the Rockets because adding underwhelming shooting threats wouldn’t be all that helpful.
Avdija, 20, just wrapped up his rookie season in Washington and showed some promise in the limited minutes he saw. Avdija averaged 6.3 points, 4.9 rebounds, and 1.2 assists from his reserve small forward role, and he shot the ball relatively well as well. There’s potential there, but is he a clean fit with Cunningham?

Rui Hachimura, like Deni Avdija, was also the number nine overall pick but just one year prior to Avdija and he is a poor shooter that would hurt the floor spacing on a team that already has a bad shooter ‘do-it-all’ player in Jae’Sean Tate. He averaged 13.8 points, 5.5 rebounds, and 1.4 assists this season, but he doesn’t seem like he’d be a fit.
