This Heat-Timberwolves offseason trade is centered on D’Angelo Russell

Does this trade make sense for the Miami Heat?

The only way this trade makes sense for the Miami Heat is if they lose in the first-round of the playoffs this year and a vast majority of their players depart and go elsewhere in free agency. Victor Oladipo, Trevor Ariza, Nemanja Bjelica, Duncan Robinson and Kendrick Nunn are all set to become free agents and if the Heat lose a vast majority of these guys, including Oladipo and Robinson, then trading for Russell makes a lot of sense.

If Oladipo agrees to a contract-extension though and Duncan Robinson does come back, there is no reason for the Miami Heat to trade both Dragic and Iguodala, two key veteran players, in order to bring in yet another point guard that will be competing for minutes with some other backcourt players.

There is no denying that D’Angelo Russell is a fantastic, young player when healthy, but right now, the risk on him outweighs the potential reward, especially since he has only played in 20 games this season and played in just 45 games last season.

With Tyler Herro, Duncan Robinson, Victor Oladipo, Goran Dragic and Kendrick Nunn in the backcourt, the Heat already have plenty of firepower and options in numerous rotations, which is why there is no need for D’Angelo Russell right now.

This decision solely remains on what Victor Oladipo plans to do this offseason and with the way things are trending, it seems very likely that he will be staying in South Beach and re-sign with the Miami Heat at the conclusion of the season.
