Why this trade makes sense for the Boston Celtics

Outside of Jaylen Brown, Jayson Tatum and Kemba Walker, the Boston Celtics do not have a lot of talent on their roster. Guys like Tristan Thompson, Daniel Theis and rookie Payton Pritchard have stepped up at times, but are nothing more than role players. With not a lot of firepower and virtually no reliable bench players, the Celtics will definitely have a hard time competing for a title this year with their current roster.

However, by adding John Collins, they can immediately jump back into the title conversation against the likes of the Nets, 76ers and Bucks in the East. Boston needs that other dynamic player they can depend on outside of their three All-Stars and John Collins is the best option for the Celtics that is supposedly available on the trade market.

The Celtics have come up short over the last several years of making the NBA Finals and a large part of that is because they do not surround their stars with high-level secondary talent. Boston’s bench has been one of the worst over the years and as a result, they have no production outside of their three superstars.

John Collins can not only help elevate a lot of pressure off of Boston’s current All-Star players by being a fourth reliable scoring option, but Tony Snell is also an experienced, veteran player who can be an impactful bench player for Boston. Snell has always been known to be a reliable defender throughout his career and has been shooting well from beyond-the-arc in his limited minutes this season in Atlanta.

Getting that fourth star-like player could really make a huge difference for a team like Boston who is a legit championship contender, but does not have the firepower that other contending teams have. Jayson Tatum, Jaylen Brown and Kemba Walker are all fantastic players, but these three alone cannot deliver a championship to Boston, which is why trading for John Collins would be a very smart move by this front-office.
