Los Angeles Lakers Receive: G Patty Mills, SAS 2023 2nd Round Pick

San Antonio Spurs Receive: G Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, F Alfonzo McKinnie

Overall, adding another reliable frontcourt player is a lot more important than pursuing another guard at the moment, but Patty Mills could really be an impactful player for the Lakers. Not only is he one of the better bench scorers in the entire league this season, but he has been a part of numerous championship caliber teams with the Spurs during his career and could aid the Lakers in their efforts to win back-to-back titles.

While he does not bring much to the table on the defensive end of the court, Mills has steadily been a productive offensive weapon over the years and has put together some solid years these last few seasons as he is now 32 years old.

His ability to still contribute at a high level and be an excellent bench option on a championship level team is what makes him a valuable player and a guy the Lakers should absolutely target in trade talks with the Spurs, even if it will cost them a guy like Kentavious Caldwell-Pope.

While he is their starting shooting guard and is shooting 40.2% from three-point range this year, Kentavious Caldwell-Pope is not nearly as well-rounded of a scoring guard as Patty Mills is. KCP has been a huge role player in the Lakers’ rotations over the years, but Mills helps them more in terms of immediate value in their championship efforts.

At a very affordable price with this trade, Los Angeles could be getting a key bench player that could make their overall depth and bench scoring that much better. At full strength, this Lakers team will definitely be a tough team to beat in the playoffs once again, but they do not have any reliable backcourt players on their bench that can score like Mills can.

Now, let’s take a closer look as to how both teams could make out well from this trade and why this trade makes sense for both the San Antonio Spurs and the Los Angeles Clippers.
