This Mavs-Thunder trade sends a veteran guard to Dallas

Why This Trade Makes Sense For The Dallas Mavericks

Dallas needs perimeter shooting and if they can not get this at the trade deadline, then they will likely not be able to make it out of the first-round of the playoffs. Last season in the first-round against the Clippers, injuries ultimately killed their chances of beating L.A. but their perimeter shooters kept them in every single game.

Luka Doncic can only do so much for this team and with him only being a 35.7% three-point threat, they need to surround him with more talent. George Hill is not a flashy name to add, but he is a very consistent player and seeing as he has what it takes to be an elite-level perimeter threat, trading for him makes a ton of sense for the Mavericks.

Quite honestly, the Mavericks just need more offensive talent on their team because nothing about their roster is very overwhelming for their opponents. They currently rank 18th in the league in scoring but outside of Doncic and Porzingis, nobody else on this team really scares their opponents.

Come playoff time, teams are going to really focus on making Doncic and Porzingis give up the ball, forcing Tim Hardaway Jr, Josh Richardson and Jalen Brunson to beat them. If this is what the Mavericks show up to the playoffs with, then they will quickly be on their way to the beach since their season will quickly be over.

Dallas needs more shooting threats like George Hill if they are to be successful and ultimately exceed the expectations placed on them right now. Acquiring Hill should be one of a few moves the Mavericks should look to make at the NBA trade deadline and they should do everything they can to “buy” more talent at the deadline.

Trey Burke only plays about 16 minutes per game this season and Josh Green is a player that has spent a lot of time in the G-League, which is why they are expendable. Sure, they would lose out on potential future value by trading Green, who was their first-round pick this season, but winning now should be the main priority for the Mavericks, especially since they do have a playoff contending team this year.

If the Mavericks hold off on making any moves, they are in danger of missing the playoffs and if they do make the playoffs, they will get beat up by the Jazz, Lakers or Clippers. For this reason alone is why they need to make some moves at the trade deadline, starting with adding George Hill.
