Boston Celtics Receive: F Jerami Grant

Detroit Pistons Receive: G Marcus Smart, G Payton Pritchard, F Aaron Nesmith, BOS 2021 1st Round Pick, OKC 2021 2nd Round Pick (via BOS), BOS 2023 1st Round Pick

If Boston is going to have any chance of trading for Jerami Grant, they are going to have to offer up a “king’s ransom” to get him. Obviously this is a ton of value in this trade scenario, which is why this is the best offer the Celtics could make to the Pistons for Jerami Grant without giving up Kemba Walker, Jayson Tatum or Jaylen Brown.

In the rare event that the Pistons do decide to move on from their star forward, Marcus Smart would probably have to be involved in the trade just because of everything he can do on the court. Not only is he a solid scorer, averaging 10.0 points and shooting 31.8% from three-point range over the course of his career, but Smart is one of the best on-ball defenders in the league.

Given that the Pistons’ backcourt is fairly weak in terms of reliable talent, Smart would definitely be a player Detroit would be interested in, as well as the Celtics’ two first-round rookies in Payton Pritchard and Aaron Nesmith.

Right now, Detroit’s goal is to continue building their roster with high-level, youthful talents, which is why Boston’s two rookies would likely be included in a trade package for Jerami Grant. Pritchard has been putting together a really solid rookie year, arguably being the Celtics’ best bench player in the backcourt and while he has not played much, Nesmith has the potential to be a solid “3-and-D” wing in this league.

It is almost certain that Jerami Grant will not be on the move at the NBA trade deadline this season, but the Pistons do get a ton of value from the Celtics in this trade scenario. With that being said, let’s take a closer look as to why this trade could possibly make sense for the Boston Celtics and the Detroit Pistons.
