Kristaps Porzingis’ Contract Status

Kristaps Porzingis signed a five-year max deal in July of 2019. With Luka Doncic’s contract extension quickly approaching, the Mavericks will find it difficult to add many impact free agents to fill out the roster alongside them.

Tim Hardaway Jr., who was acquired along with Porzingis from the Knicks, is a free agent after this season as well. He has played well in Dallas, arguably being their second-best player with Porzingis struggling at times. If they want to retain him, it will take a good chunk of money to do so.

The only path the Mavericks have to open up long-term cap space is moving Porzinigs while he still has some value.

Yes, Dallas has not been a sought after destination for free agents, but with a superstar such as Luka Doncic in place, it becomes a much easier sell to players around the league. People will want to play with a 21-year old who is already in the running for MVP awards.

In the trade with Porzingis, the Mavericks could also acquire some pieces to fit alongside Luka Doncic long-term. That would also mitigate the free-agent issue that they have had.
