Why This Trade Would Benefit The Houston Rockets
The front office in Houston got a complete overhaul in the offseason. The first move was to hire Stephen Silas to be the next head coach. Once both Russell Westbrook and James Harden were traded away, this showed that the team was interested in a rebuild.
A player like John Wall does not fit into that scheme if the team is looking to retool and get younger. The same applies for Victor Oladipo, too. Both players have struggled with injuries and just aren’t impactful enough to be franchise cornerstones at this point.
Sending John Wall away would save the Rockets some money in the long run. He is signed for two years after this one and he is owed $44.3 million and $47.3 million in those two years. This is a hefty commitment for a team looking to rebuild.
This is where short-term veterans like Kelly Olynyk and Andre Igoudala would help financially. Dragic is a replacement for Wall at the point guard position. The Rockets would just clear some cap space for some assets that would not impact their situation long term.
Houston had plenty of chances to win with Harden and even brought Westbrook to town. Nothing has worked over the years so it is time to blow it up and start over.
