Why This Trade Would Benefit The New Orleans Pelicans
It is not easy to rebuild in the NBA. Teams wait years and years to build a core through the NBA Draft, similar to what happened with the Philadelphia 76ers. Other teams choose to land a blockbuster deal in hopes of rebuilding. The New Orleans Pelicans were able to pull off both.
The Pelicans sent Anthony Davis to the Los Angeles Lakers in return for young players such as Brandon Ingram, Lonzo Ball, and Josh Hart. They were able to win the lottery and land Zion Williamson with the top pick in the 2019 NBA Draft.
Just like that, a core is built. This trade will help them unload players who are not a part of the plan, such as Eric Bledsoe and JJ Redick. Taking on Mike Conley is a non-issue considering his current contract situation.
The Pelicans might be able to contend sooner than expected if they were to land a big-name superstar for the future. Conley is not that player. He will open up cap space after the season once he is off the books and the other players are in Utah.
