Why This Trade Would Benefit The San Antonio Spurs
The benefit for the San Antonio Spurs in this deal is simple. They would be getting rid of a 31-year old player who is making $27.7 million this season. DeMar DeRozan exercised his option for this season, which was an easy decision given the money he was owed.
The Spurs have their next franchise point guard in Dejounte Murray. He is a player who has looked like the real deal and is ready to take over. Now, the Spurs have to work on putting players around him. That is what they will be doing with Julius Randle.
Also, LaMarcus Aldridge is another veteran name who could be on the move. Randle would act as a replacement down low. Both Aldridge and DeRozan are too old to build around for a dwindling team, but Randle is a much more suitable option given his age.
The Spurs would add some depth in the backcourt with Frank Ntilikina. That is, of course, if he can improve as a player under Gregg Popovich. The Knicks have some NBA Draft capital so the Spurs would also be in a position to ask for a first-round pick.
