Why This Trade Makes Sense For The New York Knicks
The New York Knicks have been an organization that has struggled for years now because of poor management and possibly the worst ownership in the NBA, but things are finally starting to turn in the right direction since GM Scott Perry and newly appointed President of Basketball Operations, Leon Rose, have taken over.
After drafting R.J. Barrett third overall last season and Obi Toppin 7th overall this year, the Knicks finally have two young talents, along with Mitchell Robinson, to build with for the foreseeable future. The only thing missing for the Knicks is a high-level player to attempt and lure All-Star talents to NYC.
Over the years, plenty of All-Star level players have wanted to join the Knicks organization, but because of their lack of success, nobody wants to go there and waste the prime of their career losing. If they can acquire Tobias Harris and prove to potential free agents around the league that they are ready to win, plenty of guys will want to come to New York in an attempt to turn this franchise around.
Tobias Harris is not a number one option on any team in the NBA, but he has shown the ability to be a solid complementary player to superstar-like talents. By bringing him in for a small asking price on their end of things, the New York Knicks would have everything except a number-one guy.
R.J. Barrett could ultimately grow into that type of a role, but the Knicks really need to target a player like Victor Oladipo, Blake Griffin or DeMar DeRozan who are proven All-Star level talents that can lead a franchise.
Giving up a first-round pick and a guy like Julius Randle would be of great value in attempts to try and lure one of these superstar players to New York and is exactly what this Knicks organization needs to do to set themselves up for future success. This trade is a no-brainer for the Knicks and is something they should look to get done before the NBA trade deadline this season.
